about comprehensive orthodontics
Comprehensive orthodontics is differentiated from limited orthodontics (short term braces or six month braces) in that an effort is make to make the alignment, appearance and overall bite as best as possible. In limited braces the effort –see web page marked shorttermbraces- the emphasis is to improve the appearance of only the upper or lower front teeth.
Comprehensive treatment is best suited for children because they are still growing their bones forming their muscles and orthodontics can take advantage of this to speed treatment and obtain results which are not easily possible with an adult patient. Adults can still benefit from comprehensive orthodontics but time requirements with work and sensitivity to appearance during treatment makes this treatment somewhat harder. For adults contemplating either short term braces or longer term comprehensive care, white or clear brackets can be used that make the braces less conspicuous.
Steps toward comprehensive braces
Examination
For the young person, dental braces should start with a complete dental examination. Teeth that have tooth decay should be treated as necessary for once orthodontics begin, oral hygiene becomes more difficult, not easier and areas of preexisting decay can proceed more rapidly. The diagnostic process includes a special x-ray of the head called a cephalometric x-ray. This is commonly done at a special facility and the results are sent to our office. This x-ray is processed by a special computer program which gives us crucial information about the direction of bone growth, the relation of the upper jaw to the lower, the relationship of the upper teeth to the lower teeth and of course informing us if there are missing, extra, or wisdom teeth. This is very important information to assist in making a diagnosis and plan to improve the bite and create an esthetic smile.
Consultation
The cephalometric x-ray study along with plaster models of the teeth allow us to evaluate the needs and most importantly discuss with you prior to treatment, what can be done and importantly, what cannot be accomplished along with the risks of orthodontics. In our consultation we want to address your concerns and to answer any questions about treatment, time involved, and costs in an unpressured setting.
