your new dentures
DAILY CARE
- Rinse your dentures after each meal.
- Be careful not to drop your dentures; they can break, bend or distort.
- Do not sleep with your dentures in your mouth. You must let your gums and oral tissues rest.
- When you denture is not in the mouth it should be kept wet in a plastic container, for example. If it dries out its shape can change and it may not fit well.
- Do not use bleaches, steel wool, or emery boards on the dentures.
- If you have a pet at home do not let the pet get a hold of your dentures; they will be ruined.
- Clean your dentures every day, in one of three ways: 1) with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste or 2) with Efferdent or Polident "fizzing" tablets- just follow directions on the box or 3) soak the dentures in a cup of warm, not hot, water with a teaspoon of baking soda.
THE FIRST DAYS...
- Eat soft food until you feel confident and are accustomed to your new dentures.
- If you feel that your speech is different, it should resume to normal sounds with time.
- If you get a sore spot, this is very common. Call the office and the denture will be adjusted. If it is extremely painful, stop wearing the denture and call the office.
- If you feel more secure with a denture cream or adhesive follow the directions on the box.
REMEMBER
Your dentures were mutually approved throughout their fabrication appointments. They require a period of adjustment. Perhaps you had teeth for many years and suddenly you now have a prosthesis. This may be a big change and it will take practice to "relearn" how to eat and talk- how to use various muscles of your mouth and tongue to control your denture and daily activities. Keep this in mind and your denture will be a healthy success.
